A Small Valentine's Day Gesture

With Valentine's Day approaching, I decided to frame numbers of the date my husband and I met to hang alongside the other images on the art wall in his office.

The project started out just fine. I lightly sanded the frame and painted it with a tinted primer.

Afterwards I mixed a few paint colors to get a yellow ochre with green undertones.

On its own this color looks questionable, I know! However, I thought one strong colored frame among all the black frames on the art wall as an accent would be unexpected and interesting. The color was inspired by the aged golden tones in the photos by Mrs. Limestone, and you have to admit, it does look striking once hung on the chalkboard wall alongside the more muted colors.

All was going well until I laid the frame on the paper with the other frames to work out the layout. After walking away, I heard a chewing sound...Roscoe!

It was repainted, not exactly fixed but salvaged.

I then stamped the date we met on a silver gray paper. After a few tries I had a stamped date that looked nice and placed it in the frame.

I returned it to the paper layout to see how it looked, and mistakenly left it there...

Yes, the dog got the other corner. I certainly should have known better. Another repair...this frame is getting more than its fair share of character rather fast I'd say.

The other corner was repaired while painting another frame for the project. Then it was ready to be hung, finally out of the dog's reach.

Happy Valentine's Day, I'm so happy we met!

And the art wall is nearly done. All the paper has been removed. The only remaining task is to have my husband break in the chalkboard by writing on it. He was on a trip, but now that he is back I'm handing him some chalk. Let's see what he writes, check back on Monday!

33 Comments, now I'd love to hear what you think!:

THat is too funny! I have a dog like that too except mine loves to steal my painting gloves and eat them OR dinner on the stove OR my kids' sandwiches. I feel your pain!
The wall is looking great by the way. I have been following along. Can't wait to see what chair you picked out! ;)

My guess is good about, what is the significant of the frame dated. Coz I meet my husband the same year.

That is so sweet of you to put it along with picture for his office.

Lucky you, your hubby is home just on time for Valentines.

I'm sure he'll enjoy those chalk and so is the kids.

Happy Valentine's Day!!

We have to wait until Monday?????? :)

Love it and the story to go along with it! I have a similar problem but it's my teething 11-month-old instead of a dog :)

Janell, I've been waiting patiently to see the finished wall and you never disappoint. What a creative idea. It looks beautiful and masculine. What a naughty doggie, but he really gave that frame a lot of character. Now I wonder what hubby will write.

I hope your husband appreciates all the effort that went into that frame! I love the punch of color it adds.

It looks wonderful, even after all the extra steps involved. Hey, at least there is a good story behind it :) Have a great weekend!

What a fun idea! Sorry to hear about the chewing...but at least the frame has even more "character" now ;)

I just did something similar with a small, except I chose our last name and our wedding date! Those little touches really do make a house a home.

For my husband and I the day we meet is a day we celebrate even more than our wedding anniversary. With May 11th coming up, I think I'll do a post on how we meet...I've been told it is one of the more interesting stories of how a couple found each other!

Lovely little addition to the wall. Men are so bad with dates (at least, mine is) so a helping hand is no bad thing. My husband couldn't even remember that we got engaged on his 30th birthday :)

naughty Roscoe haha. Once on the wall you cant even tell, it looks good as new with your paint job. The sentiment behind the date in the different frame on the wall is priceless, I just love it!

Have a great weekend!!

What a great idea! And I can relate to the dog eating a project or two.

I am sure he will love this. I cannot wait to see the finished product. I could see my beagle doing this. We're the same, always celebrate the day we met.

Very clever to frame your date!!! (and very romantic). I cannot believe that the dog got to the frame twice...omg -- I looked at it and thought that I was mistaken on what side you had fixed. I'm so anxious to see the entire wall -- the week is almost over, you know!

He will surely write, "Darling, since the day we met in 1995, I have long admired your skills for turning a plain frame into a glorious work of art, filled with sentiment, and a genius focal point"

Ooo, this is kinda like scrapbookin' on the wall! Fabulous idea! And I agree that having one different colored pic in a group of pics makes for an interesting design. I have thought about doing something similar with our new framed up wall~!

And that's funny about your doggie chewing up the frame! =-D

That story is so funny with the dog! Many years from now you will have the fond memory of the date you and your hubby met along with your adorable dog chewing the frame. I guess he wanted a place in history too!

Can't wait to see the wall when it is done!
