The (Hybrid) Slipcover Project - Thankfully Done!

I am very happy with how the chairs for the Big Boy's Bedroom turned out. But what makes me really happy? The fact that it only cost about $35 a chair to recover vs. the $1000 a chair estimate that my upholsterer quoted me!

To wrap up the project all that was left to do was cover the seat cushions, and I wanted to do it as quickly as possible. To make this happen the cushions were laid directly on a double layer of fabric, the shape traced and cut out with a one inch seam allowance. No time for patterns!

For some odd reason I kept thinking of baking and decorating cakes...

Next the circumference and height of the cushions were measured to figure out the dimensions to cut the cushion cover edges. One inch seam allowances were added to these measurements, at the top, bottom and ends of the strips. Then two were cut, one for each cover.

The strips were then sewn onto the top sides of the covers. Afterwards the seams were pressed open and slipped over the old cushions to check the fit.

Seeing the fit was fine, the bottom sides of the covers were sewn onto the opposite edge of the strips. Then all the seams were pressed and the covers turned right side out. The final step was to insert the old cushions into their new covers, stitch up the back openings and place the newly covered cushions onto the chairs.

Someday I'd like to get the chairs professionally redone to perfection. But for now, this is just fine.

i cannot believe the quote from the upholsterer. wow! you really saved a bundle, and in the end the chairs have more detail and charm than if you had passed them off to the upholsterer!

How gratifying was that? Saving nearly $1000 on upholstering... If you can do that you can do anything :) It looks professionally handled and your details with the trim and buttons are a beautiful addition. FABULOUS!

Looks so great! I bought an ugly chair from craig's list a while back and it's just sitting there, ugly and reminding me of my lousy craig's list skills (my skills are slightly better these days).. at first i planned to reupholster it myself but thought it would take me forever and then we decided to just sell it.. but your progress and your results have me reconsidering.... hmmmmmmmmmm

They are fan-blimin-tastic! I have done alot of upholstering in my time but I have never attempted a slipcover. Maybe, just maybe, I might give it a go after seeing this post.

"For some odd reason I kept thinking of baking and decorating cakes...," made me snorted while drinking my coffee! I was thinking the same thing when I saw the design. The color looked like dough's. Anyway, another thing which caught my eye was the carpet in the room. My husband and I love the pattern. We already handed our rugs to the carpet cleaners (Greensboro, NC) for pet stain removal. Our puppy keep on leaving some paw stain. The carpet cleaning (Greensboro) guys did a pretty good job as they put some enzyme thingy on it to eliminate the odor. Now I'm thinking of buying a carpet close to the design of that one! Thanks for sharing.
